A calculator for everyday sums
A basic calculator does the jobs you meet every day: adding a bill, splitting an expense, checking a discount or working out change. This one adds memory keys, a percent key, square root, square and reciprocal, and it keeps a history of your last results so you can reuse them.
It works like a pocket calculator: numbers and operations are applied one at a time, exactly as you press them. For long expressions with brackets, use the scientific calculator instead.
How the keys work
Result = first number (operation) second number
Percent key: 200 + 10% = 200 + (200 × 10 ÷ 100)
Worked example
Splitting a ₹2,340 restaurant bill with a 10% tip between 4 people
- Bill + 10% tip
- ₹2574
- Per person (÷ 4)
- ₹643.5
Press 2340 + 10 % = to add the tip, then ÷ 4 = to split it.
Memory and shortcut keys
- M+ / M− add the number on screen to memory, or subtract it, so you can keep a running total.
- MR brings the memory back to the screen and MC clears it.
- Ans recalls the last answer, and tapping any item in the history reuses it.
- √, x², 1/x work on the number on screen straight away.
- ± flips the sign, and your keyboard's digits, + − * /, Enter and Backspace all work.
Add or subtract a percentage in one go: 500 − 20 % gives 400, because the percent key takes 20% of the first number.
